History of radiant heating

Infrared radiation or IR radiation is a type of electromagnetic and thermal radiation,  having a longer wavelength than that of visible light and was discovered by the German astronomer William Herschel in 1800.

Using a mercury thermometer in the spectrum of sunlight obtained through a glass prism so as to measure the heat emitted by each colour, Herschel discovered that heat was stronger next to the red colour of the spectrum, noting that there was no light and it was therefore invisible to the human eye. Naming his discovery as heat radiation, although over time this name was to become known as infrared radiation.
